Which Johor court hears your case

Johor is large, with nine district courts: Johor Bahru, Muar, Batu Pahat, Mersing, Kluang, Segamat, Pontian, Kota Tinggi and Tangkak.[2] A hadhanah claim usually goes to the court nearest the child’s own home, not automatically Johor Bahru.
JKSNJ, not JAINJ, for your case
JKSNJ runs the courts and hears your hadhanah application. JAINJ, a separate office, only registers nikah, divorce and rujuk, so it is not where you file a custody claim.
If parents live in different districts, bring evidence of where the child actually spends most days. The court weighs the child’s real routine over either parent’s preferred address.
What to bring for your claim
Bring evidence tied to the child’s daily welfare, stronger proof than a simple claim about who “should” have them.
- A proposed care and living arrangement, naming the district it applies to.
- School or clinic records from where the child currently lives.
- Proof of steady income and a settled home for the parent applying.
- Any arrangement already in place since the separation began.

My child lives in Segamat. Do I still need to travel to Johor Bahru for hadhanah?
Not usually. Johor has a Mahkamah Rendah Syariah in nine districts, including Segamat, Muar and Kluang. A hadhanah claim tied to a child in Segamat is normally filed and heard at the Segamat court, not in Johor Bahru.
Should I contact JKSNJ or JAINJ about a custody question?
JKSNJ runs the Syariah courts and hears your hadhanah case. JAINJ registers nikah, divorce and rujuk. If you are filing or attending a hearing, JKSNJ is the relevant body; JAINJ only matters if you need a registration record.
Both parents live in different Johor districts. Which court decides?
The court usually looks at where the child actually lives day to day, since that is the home the court needs to assess. If the child splits time unevenly between parents, bring evidence of where they mainly stay before you file.
Does the RM100,000 civil jurisdiction cap affect a hadhanah case?
That cap applies to civil claims heard at the Mahkamah Rendah Syariah, such as property or maintenance disputes. A hadhanah order itself is not a monetary claim, so the cap does not block your custody application regardless of the amount involved elsewhere.
