Sijil Nikah: proof of a valid marriage

Sijil nikah is the official document confirming a marriage was validly registered under Islamic law and state legislation. It is issued once the marriage contract is completed and registered with the Islamic Religious Department.

In a divorce application, a copy of the sijil nikah usually must be attached to the borang cerai, since it proves the court has jurisdiction over that marriage. Without it, the application can be delayed until alternative proof is provided, such as a records search at the religious department.

If the certificate is lost or damaged, a duplicate can be applied for at the state religious department before the divorce application continues.
