Wali (the lawful guardian who consents to a woman's marriage)

Wali is the lawful guardian of a woman who wants to marry, usually her biological father, and if unavailable, the role passes to the nearest male relative in a set order.

Wali issues often come up when a wife wants to remarry after a divorce or a rujuk, especially if the father cannot be reached or refuses to act as wali.

Where a wali is unwilling or unavailable, the marriage can proceed through a wali hakim appointed by the Syariah Court.
