Talak Satu: the first talaq, reconciliation still possible

Talak satu is the first talaq a husband pronounces. It falls under talak raj’i, meaning the type of talaq that still allows the couple to reconcile during the iddah period without a new marriage contract.

For example, if the husband pronounces talak satu in court, the wife enters her iddah period. During that time, the husband can take her back without remarrying, as long as she does not object and the reconciliation is reported following procedure.

If the iddah period ends without reconciliation, the marriage ends and remarriage needs a new contract. Talak satu differs from talak dua or talak tiga in how much room for reconciliation remains.
