Sijil Cerai: the official proof of divorce

Sijil cerai is the official document confirming that a divorce has been registered with the Syariah Court. It is issued once a divorce order is granted and the iddah period ends, or once an out-of-court divorce pronouncement is registered.

This certificate matters for post-divorce matters, such as updating status with the National Registration Department, claiming child maintenance, or remarrying. Without a sijil cerai, a divorced person can struggle to prove their status to a third party.

The sijil cerai differs from a perakuan cerai, which is usually issued earlier as temporary proof before the full certificate is processed.
