Afidavit: a sworn statement for your court case

An affidavit is a written statement you swear before a commissioner for oaths, and it becomes one of the main pieces of evidence in a court case. Its content must be true to your own knowledge.

In fasakh or maintenance cases, the court often asks for an affidavit setting out the facts of your case in detail, such as the date your husband stopped paying maintenance or the incident behind your claim. This affidavit supports other documents like bank statements or a police report.

Because it is sworn, a false statement in an affidavit can carry serious legal consequences. Prepare it carefully, and check it again before you sign.
