What is fast-track divorce?

Fast-track divorce is an expedited service that lets a genuine mutual-consent case finish in a much shorter time than the standard process. It runs in only some states, not nationwide.

This is not a separate route from section 47. It is a way the court speeds up a mutual-consent case that is already complete and genuine.

Who qualifies for fast-track?

The service is designed for a couple who genuinely agree to divorce, attend court together, and have complete documents. The court also needs to be satisfied the marriage cannot be saved.

If there is still a dispute over property, maintenance, or custody, your case may need to go through the standard process first before it qualifies for this route.

Where did fast-track come from?

Selangor piloted the service at selected courts starting November 2014, then rolled it out to all 12 Lower Syariah Courts in the state by June 2015.^[1] Selangor is regarded as the state that originated this expedited service.

Since then, other states have begun considering a similar service, depending on their own court capacity.

Fast-track in Wilayah Persekutuan

Wilayah Persekutuan introduced its own fast-track service in 2021 for genuine mutual-consent cases. A qualifying case can be heard and a written order issued on the same day, in under six hours from registration.^[2]

This service applies across Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan, since the three territories share the same court.

Does every state offer fast-track?

No. So far, only Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan have confirmed their own fast-track service. Other states have not confirmed the same service, though some may be reviewing it.

What should you prepare to qualify?

Prepare identification documents, your marriage certificate, and any written agreement on maintenance, custody or property that you have already reached. Make sure both of you can attend together on the scheduled date.
